Title would be the best in Premier League history, says Mark Lawrenson

Writing in his column for the Daily Mirror, ex Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson was gushing with praise for Brendan Rodgers, and suggested that a title victory this year would surpass all others since the inception of the competition – a feat that may never be again repeated.

His reasoning stems from the fact that his former team finished 7th last season, and also have had significantly less resources at their disposal to compete with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City.

He also remarked on the thrilling style of attacking football and fearless attitude that Rodgers has instilled in his players that has entertained both the die-hard Kop fans and neutrals alike this season.

He wrote, “Brendan Rodgers has done, this season, something that may never be done again. He has taken a team that were seventh last term and lifted them above three far better resourced teams (Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal) with much better squads to win the title.

“For me, to have come from nowhere as they have done, really does make it the best title victory we have seen in the last 21 years.”

Although he sounds entirely confident of Liverpool holding on to their 5 point advantage over Chelsea, the match at the weekend will decide a lot about how both the team and its fans will approach the final games of the season. A win next weekend at Anfield will all but seal title victory for the Scousers, but it is clear that Rodgers and his players are not getting carried away just yet.
