Skrtel praises his team’s fighting spirit in battling win over Norwich

Martin Skrtel was a happy man after Liverpool’s hard fought victory over a very resilient and tenacious Norwich City side on Sunday afternoon.

After a typical whirlwind first-half display where the Reds scored 2 early goals and looked quite comfortable, the second half didn’t quite go according to plan and Norwich produced a stirring fight back that Liverpool looking vulnerable at times.

The defensive unit was forced to dig deep to keep the Norwich team from grabbing a late equalizer and Skrtel and Co. had a real aerial battle with the Norwich attackers throughout the match.

As the final whistle blew, a look of relief could be seen across the players’ faces as they realized that they were 3 points closer to their goal of Premier League glory.

Speaking to the club’s official website, he was keen to highlight his team’s will to win and the battling qualities that helped to earn them the victory.

He said,  “We have three very precious points”

“The first half was really good, we were dominant, scored two goals and also kept them at bay, but the second half was different.”

“They played really well and never gave up. We didn’t play that well in the second half but we fought very hard and we won. It was a collective effort.”

Next weekend will be huge in deciding the final resting place of this year’s League title. With Manchester City having won last night at home to West Bromich Albion, the result leaves Liverpool 6 points clear of the Sky Blues who have one game in hand and a better goal difference of +4.

amazon-liverpoolLiverpool, of course, hosts Chelsea at Anfield in what is set to be a mouthwatering clash with everything at stake. Realistically, it is a must win game for Chelsea as they are 5 points of the pace, and have to cope  with 2 hugely important Champions League semi-final clashes against Athletico Madrid either side of the weekend’s fixture.

Man City will certainly be hoping for a Chelsea victory as it would leave  the league chances back in its hands, but Skrtel is glad that his team now have a week to prepare for the potential ‘match of the season’.

“Now we have one week to get ready for Chelsea and obviously everyone knows what a game that is,” he concluded.
