Rodgers spring clean ahead of new season

Brendan Rodgers has plans for a serious shake-up in terms of off-loading non-performing players ahead of next season.

Some of the players on his hit-list are reported to be Lago Aspas, Luis Alberto and potentially Kolo Touré just 12 months after their arrival at the club. Rodgers has claimed he intends to sign quality over quantity to ensure the squad is at its strongest next year. The future of up to 12 players in the current squad are under consideration although it’s not expected that all of them will leave.

The central defender Tiago Ilori will remain on loan to Granada where he has been playing since January.

21 year old Luis Alberto was chased heavily by Liverpool and finally signed for a fee of £6.8million. Despite this, he did not start for LFC even once during the seasons challenge for the League title although he started twice and made nine appearances as a substitute in cup competitions.  It is expected that he may be loaned out next season.

Lago Aspas made five starts in the Premier League this season, scoring just once. He transferred from Celta Vigo last summer for a fee of €9million. However, it can be argued that his lack of time on the pitch is due to the fantastic form of Suarz and Sturridge who both featured heavily in the line-up’s for last season’s games. At 26 years old, he certainly shouldn’t be relegated to the bench for another season and is said to be open to a move back to Spain.

Kolo Touré who transferred from Manchester City for free started the season playing strongly. However, he struggled to perform after he returned from an injury. Touré, under contract with Liverpool until 2015, has openly admitted that he needs to discuss his future at the club with boss Rodgers.
