Rickie Lambert is a ‘fantastic’ striker says Fowler

Southampton striker Rickie Lambert has arrived at Anfield to undergo a medical prior to his move to the club.

The 32 year old player began his footballing career at the Reds academy aged just 10 years, he was released at age 15 and signed with Blackpool before moving between Macclesfield Town, Stockport County, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers. He signed for Southampton in 2009, a key move for the club and one in which Lambert played a key role in securing their promotion to the Championship in 2010 and the following season, to the Premier League. Lambert showed excellent form at the club, becoming their top scorer.

The married dad of three was on the bench as a substitute in last night’s World Cup warm-up game against Peru in which England secured a 3-0 victory, but he was not called upon to play.

It seems likely that Lambert will sign for the Reds should his medical progress without a hitch. His fee is reported to be around the £4m mark and if everything goes to plan, he will be the first signing this summer for LFC.

He may well be joined by two of his Southampton teammates later this summer as Liverpool bosses are in negotiations over Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren in order to strengthen their defensive line ahead of the 2014/15 season.

Robbie Fowler a former Liverpool striker thinks the move is a solid one and has dubbed Lambert as a “fantastic” striker.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Fowler commented:

“From a Liverpool point of view, I think it is a perfect fit,”

“He is probably a little bit different to what the Reds have already but he is a Liverpool lad and all is family are Liverpool fans. Straightaway you’re going to get that added 10 per cent from him.

“He’ll give his all and for £4m or £5m, I think it is a fantastic bit of business. He is an England striker with a proven record in the Premier League. I know he hasn’t fitted in with Liverpool’s ideas in the past.

“We’ve wanted young, vibrant, fast players. I think sometimes you do need a bit of experience as Roy Hodgson has showed with his squad. But I think he is a fantastic player and he’ll add to what we have in the squad already.”
