Liverpool vs Brondby Pre-Match

It was eight and a half years ago when Liverpool signed current vice-captain Daniel Agger from his boyhood club Brondby, a player who has grown so attached to the Anfield club that the acronym “Y.N.W.A” is permanently etched on to his right knuckles. It has also been eight and a half years since Liverpool, as part of the deal to bring the Dane to Merseyside, agreed to play a friendly with Brondby. That agreement is finally taking place, as Brendan Rodgers prepares to condition his men for a Premier League season which is showing all of the signs of being even more competitive than last year.

lfc-booksReturning loanees Fabio Borini, Jordan Ibe, Suso and Andre Wisdom will be looking to make their mark before the opening match against Southampton after impressing at other clubs last season, while it’s expected that Thiago Ilori will leave Anfield for another year to gain more experience should a suitable club make an approach. New signing Emre Can has not been selected in the squad, and talented winger Lazar Markovic, who signed yesterday for a reported £20million, is not expected to make an appearance until the Guinness International Champions Cup gets underway in the USA next weekend. Jose Enrique continues to regain fitness following a knee injury which has kept him sidelined since November.

Rodgers will undoubtedly use this game and the first official pre-season fixture at Preston North End on Saturday as opportunity to assess who is best suited to start against AS Roma on the 27th in Boston, and his starting 11 for today’s game is expected to be a mix of Premier League experience and youth, with those who played in the World Cup not arriving back from their holidays until the squad flies out to the USA on Sunday. Rickie Lambert, while cutting short his holiday to start training a week early, has made it clear that he doesn’t wish to push any youth out of the squad, and instead will make himself available at the same time as his England counterparts. Daniel Agger captains against his former side, while Lucas, Allen and Coutinho could well make up a midfield trio behind Borini, Ibe and Suso.

Confirmed Liverpool squad selection:
Jones, Agger, Coutinho, Lucas, Allen, Ilori, Borini, Suso, Ibe, Kelly, Coady, Skrtel, Flanagan, Adorjan, Smith, Phillips, Rossiter, Wisdom, Jones, Ward, Teixeira, Peterson, Stewart.
