Glen Johnson believes he is England’s first choice

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has spoken to the Daily Mail and insisted he is confident he will be first choice in The World Cup line-up.

Although suffering a number of injuries and issues surrounding his fitness last season, the 29 year old is confident he is ready to face the World Cup challenge and play alongside his team mates.

“I’ve played every game I’ve been fit for in the last four or five years,’ he said. ‘There was never a point when I thought I wasn’t going to be in the squad. I don’t think I’ve ever not been England’s first choice,”

His injuries and attitude towards them have been of concern to LFC boss Brendan Rodgers. He believes that Johnson has a tendency to want to return to the field too quickly and doesn’t give himself a chance to heal fully. Johnson however clearly disagrees:

“I was playing for two or three months with two or three injuries but they were never serious. With all three of them playing a part though, it was affecting how I played and my ability to run.

“We called a time-out and said I’ve got to get fit, get it sorted, but it was only ever going to be a few weeks, not a season-ending type of injury. I was never worried that much.”
